Weronika Falkowska: A Triumph Across the Board in Ortisei

07.12.24

In Saturday’s singles final at the Sparkasse Women’s ITF Val Gardena Südtirol  (25.000 $), Falkowska faced Silvia Ambrosio, representing TC Rungg. Despite closely contested sets, Falkowska secured victory with a scoreline of 6:4, 7:5. The Polish player demonstrated nerves of steel and tactical precision in critical moments.

"I was more consistent today, avoided giving away easy points, and stuck rigidly to my match plan. That was the key to my success," said a visibly pleased Falkowska after the match.

Ambrosio, however, struggled with her form:
"From the start, my shots weren’t there. She served very well, and it was tough to break her. I just wasn’t at the level I’d shown in previous days," admitted the 27-year-old, born in Germany but representing her parents’ home country for the past year and a half. Ambrosio acknowledged that the tournament’s demands took a toll, particularly after a season with limited matches.
"I’ve never played more than three matches in one tournament. I felt that today."

Doubles Success Sparks Momentum

Falkowska had already made her mark on Friday, clinching the doubles title alongside Swedish partner Lisa Zaar. In a fiercely contested final, they saved two match points to defeat Ekaterina Ovcharenko and Emily Webley-Smith, securing Falkowska’s remarkable 23rd ITF doubles title. Currently ranked 187th in the doubles world rankings, Falkowska demonstrated her potential for even greater heights.

A Reward for Hard Work

With her singles victory, Falkowska celebrated her 8th ITF singles title and earned €3,542 in prize money. The win also guarantees a rise in the WTA singles rankings, marking another milestone for the ambitious Polish player. The triumph in Ortisei underscored her versatility and her ability to deliver in pivotal moments.

Big Plans for TC Urtijei

Looking ahead, TC Urtijei is aiming to take their tournament to the next level. Plans are underway to host a WTA 125,000 event next year. Tournament organizer Martina Moser and her team are hard at work on this ambitious project, which could become a flagship event for South Tyrol and beyond.

"We are already on the WTA calendar for the second week of October, but there are still a few uncertainties. We need strong sponsors to help us make this project a reality," Moser explained. She added that key discussions within the organizing committee are scheduled for late January or early February to finalize plans.
