Runner-Up Diana Marcinkevica fought like a lioness
Mona Barthel (WTA 250) from Germany is the winner of the Raiffeisen ITF Women's Val Gardena Südtirol 2023. The number 3 seed, who was already ranked 23rd in the world in 2013, brought all her experience to bear and defeated Latvia's Diana Marcinkevica (WTA 375) 6:2 6:7 (6) 6:4 in almost two hours. She collected € 3,542 in prize money and 50 points for the world rankings.
The 31-year-old Diana Marcinkevica didn't really get into the match in the first set and conceded two breaks. Barthel played very calmly, made hardly any mistakes and won the first set 6:2.
In the second set, the Latvian fought like a lioness and Barthel tried to fight against the Latvian's powerful game. It came to a tie-break and Marcinkevica took a 6:3 lead, but Barthel was able to catch up to 6:6. Neither player managed a break, but Marcinkevica served well and deservedly levelled the set.
Barthel was not fazed in the third set and quickly took a 4:1 lead. She was very confident on her serve and Marcinkevica couldn't do much. She ran a lot and tried to play her game. At 3:5, she even managed to fend off a match point with an ace and then took Barthel's serve at zero. However, Mona Barthel did not want to risk another tie-break and earned a match point, which she realised immediately. The 33-year-old, who was playing in South Tyrol for the first time, won the match.
